Fall Reading
I love to read! Especially in the Fall, when the season shifts to cool, and the leaves transform to scarlet and copper and gold. Curling up in a favorite spot, with a favorite book, or a new book, or a stack of books, helps me to look forward to the end of the summer. It’s my way of saying goodbye to summer fun and welcoming in a slower season of reflection and quiet.
Having a list of books to read makes it easier to slow down and enjoy this time. So, curl up with a blanket and a book, and welcome in Autumn.

1. Romance
Jane Austen
Inga Shcheglova
I love all of them!
Persuasion: My favorite!
Northanger Abbey: This is a good one for a blustery Fall day.

And here is a Dictionary to go along with Jane Austen’s novels:
The Jane Austen Dictionary by Emmalee Haskell
Louisa May Alcott
I have read this as abridged and unabridged. The abridged version is better, in my opinion. But, if you haven’t read the whole book and you love to read, then give the unabridged version a try.
Lucy Maud Montgomery
Some of her books tend to be dark. Which is no wonder, if you have read a biography about her. I like the more lighthearted books. She wrote a lot! These are the books that I recommend:
The Blue Castle is possibly my favorite book of all books! I read it every year. And I am always buying it, two at a time, so I can give it away to friends.
Grace Livingston Hill
She wrote over 100 novels, and she lived through World War I and World War II. This is a list of the books that I like the most. I like all of her books and recommend all of them. Keep in mind that she lived in a different time and culture than we do.

Emilie Loring
She also wrote and published many books, around 50. She also lived through World War I and World War II. I like all of her books and recommend all of them. These are the ones I like the most:
Charlotte Bronte
Lance Reis
I love all of her books!
This is an absolute favorite! I remember reading it as a teenager and being fascinated with the storyline. I recommended it to my sister, and was she ever surprised when she got to what was going on in the attic!
Villette: I really like this one, too!
This is a favorite, too! I love that he cauterizes her wound from a dog bite and promises to stay with her if she dies of rabies. So romantic!
Anne Bronte

Agnes Grey: This is a short and good book.
The Bronte Sisters’ books are perfect for stormy Autumn evenings.
Jan Karon
The Mitford Years Series
There are 14 novels in this heartwarming series. This is the first book:
Ann B. Ross
The Miss Julia Series
There are 22 books in this series. They are fun and quick reads. Here are the first 3 novels in the series:
2. Mysteries
I like reading mysteries, but only one or two at a time. And I’m careful with what authors I read. If you want a mystery that incorporates humor, or develops characters, and isn’t just about the crime, then these suggestions are for you.
Agatha Christie
All of her books are great. I tend to read the Miss Marple Series, as they are lighthearted and Miss Marple is sweet. Here are a few to try:
Dee Henderson
I have read all of her books and really like them. I recommend all of her books. They are emotional stories, full of strong characters with integrity, resilience, and compassion. Here are a few to consider reading:
The O’Malley Collection: This is all 7 books in the series.
These are the first 2 books in the series:
These are stand-alone books that are also engaging and full of suspense:

The Importance of Being Earnest
4. Young Adult
Reading some of the books that we loved when we were younger is fun and reflective. What do you remember loving about the book, and what do you look at differently now? Here are some of my favorites that I tend to go back and read.
Irene Hunt
Beverly Cleary
Farzin Yarahmadi
Lucy Maud Montgomery
Alexander Mass
Here is the first book in the series:
Edith Nesbit
Marco De Luca
Louisa May Alcott
J K Rowling
Mikhail Nilov
Here is the first book in the series:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
I read to my children every day when they were growing up. When one of my boys was about 8 years old, he requested that I read Harry Potter aloud to our family. That began an adventure that took us 7 years to accomplish, each book taking about a year to read. We have fond memories of those books and those years.
5. Fairytales
Fairytale novels are so much fun to read. Here is a charming retelling of Beauty & the Beast. It’s a novel full of enchanted roses, mysterious talking forest animals, adventurous sisters, and a castle that is blackened with age.
Read a sample of it here:
The Treekeeper’s Daughter by Marilee Boekweg
I hope you find time to read this Fall. Discover some new books, and revisit some old favorites. And enjoy the crisp days and glowing nights of Autumn.
