PRACTICE & PERFORMANCE NOTES FROM MARILEE

BREATH MARKS

These breath marks work for me. It’s important that you put in the breath marks that you are comfortable with. Keep in mind that where you breathe usually ends a phrase and begins another. So, aim for musical and consistent breath marks.

Breathing can change from the practice room to the performance hall. When we perform, we are dealing with nerves, along with everything else! Being nervous tends to make us short of breath. Keep this in mind as you insert breath marks. That long phrase that you can make in the practice room might be surprisingly difficult to make during a performance. Add in some breath marks in parentheses, just in case you find that you need them during a performance. This will ensure that you breathe in musically accurate places.

DYNAMICS

Experiment with using implied dynamics. Which are:

Getting louder when the notes go up.

Getting softer when the notes go down.

Record yourself and listen to what you are doing with the dynamics. Sometimes we feel that we are playing a beautiful pianissimo, when it’s mostly an internal feeling. Make sure that your dynamics are being heard, not just felt by you!

ARTICULATION

Check your articulation, as well, by recording yourself. Sometimes we think our staccato notes are light and lively. But when we listen to them, we might just hear a lot of air without a lot of sound.

PRACTICE PERFORMING

Gather family, friends, roommates, neighbors, and put on a mini-performance. Take note of where you snuck a breath, what notes were hard to play in tempo, what dynamics didn’t feel right or didn’t come across, etc. Record this also, so you can listen to it and make your own assessments.

Keep in mind that every performance is going to be a unique experience. And every time we perform, we improve. Whether it’s our musical abilities and performance skills, or accomplishment of personal growth and life goals. Or all of this!
