PRACTICE & PERFORMANCE NOTES FROM MARILEE

BREATH MARKS

Mark in breath marks that you are comfortable with. Keep in mind that where you breathe ends the phrase, so place breath marks where it feels musically accurate. Add in extra breath marks, in parentheses, for performance nerves. Sometimes it’s hard to make long phrases during the performance.

When there is a breath mark over a slur (mvmt. 2), if you need to breathe there, continue to think of the notes as connected. How you think of the phrasing comes across in your playing.

ARTICULATION

Be consistent with your articulation. Use a pattern and stay with it. And keep in mind that articulation is not so much about tonguing and slurring as it is about where your momentum is going. Decide which notes are the “landing notes” and which notes lead up to those.

These patterns work well for Bach Sonatas:

Also use double tonguing and triple tonguing, where applicable. Don’t go faster than you can play cleanly. Make sure the notes have sound, not just air.

DYNAMICS

Have fun experimenting with implied dynamics. If the notes go up, crescendo. If the notes go down, decrescendo.

ORNAMENTS

When trilling D# to E, slightly vent (lift) the left hand 1st finger, to allow some air to escape. This helps with air response and intonation.

These movements are fun to play and delightful to listen to. So, enjoy learning and performing them!

Marilee
